Do you agree or not with Mary Sherry's central point in "In Praise of the 'F' Word" (p. 497-99 of our text). Please explain in a sophisticated and nuanced manner.

The essay written by Mary Shelley does bring up a few good points. Many students are passed without having a full understanding of the criteria that they have learned. Also, many students wing it...we all know what this means. The student does only what it would take to pass the class, just to get by. If the teachers would inform their students about the consequences of winging it, then maybe more students that are going into the workforce today would have a better knowledge of what they should/need to know.

I thought this story was very enlighting. We all know someone who has passed a class by without meeting requirments. We also know teachers who will do this for some students. If teachers continue this behavior what are they teaching? Should they continue teaching at a school if they are not succeding? The world today needs humans with common sense, education, and knowledge. This essay by Mary Shelley proves these points and makes them very clear.

I thought that the story was very moving. You don't want to think that this really does happen in our school systems but it does. It seems that everyone forgets about things like this until they are actually brought up. I believe that passing students along through high school can lead to them always being behind in life especially if the plan to attend college. she made these points along with many others in the story very clear.

This is very common problem with some teachers and students. I know from personal experience, most of my time in high school was spent just doing what got me to pass. I’m trying hard not to make the same mistake. But the idea of failure is scary even to most precarious of slackers, its human nature to fear failure.

I thought the story was very true. I knew a couple of classmates that should not have passed a grade or graduated. It is true what Marry Sherry says about passing students because they worked hard or are "nice". I also believe that both students and employers are being cheated. I never really thought about how much it could effect people until I read "In Praise of the 'F' Word". I think if the story was read by more teachers or even brought up at school board meetings maybe students just couldn't get by as easier and could bring this to teachers and parents attention.

I agree with how Mary Sherry made her point in the writing. As a mother I would not expect my child to pass classes by just getting by or winging it. I feel parents need to stay on top of things at school and be involed with talking to the teachers and having conferences. I was not happy with my sons grades the second nine weeks of school, so my husband and I meet with the teacher. If children don't know the work then they need to get help. I would fail a student if they are not mastering the knowledge. Kids need a good kick into realility.

"In Praise of the 'F' Word" has the right idea of "scaring" students into achieving success by threatening them with "F's". I agree with the comment about "meaningless diplomas", in that too often are students allowed to float along in their academic careers to graduation. If the "F" concept was supported by the board of education, then the "slackers" in school could receive their well deserved "wake-up calls" to actually apply themselves to trying to fully comprehend the work given to them.

I though this story was very good because many teachers pass the students without them know the information. When the teacher told the parent that she would fail her son; she was surprise. When you tell people that you will fail them they will be surprise because they were handed their grades before today.

I thought this story was good and gave good information on how students try to pass a class but does little to pass it. Also how some teachers pass students without them really knowing anything. Since i just graduated high school two years ago i've scene these things first hand. Todays students feel that they can pass a class with just doing little work or doing now work at all thats the wrong way to look at things, because when they get out into the real world and try getting a job you just cant wing it and just get bye by doing the bear minimum, because you well not have a job for long.
Teachers can be blamed for the same thing but in a different way. Some teachers well pass students just to pass them even though the student should not pass. Some reasons teachers do this because they do not care or they just want that student out of their class. If teachers continue to do this the students will not succeed in life. The purpose of high school is to prepare you for college and your career.

This essay was very interesting and I feel what they was coming from. Most of the teachers now days are more worried about getting that paycheck rather a students education and how far they are going in life. When I was in high school the teachers main objective was to teach the material and to make sure that the students pass those SOL tests, but know some teachers act like they really don't care about anything so they just past you or fail you.

Mary Shelley does a good job in this story. If it takes making kids scared to get them to do the work then by all means go ahead and scare them. If they dont do the work then they will have to repeat that grade next year.
